Medical Marijuana Fights Seizures
In the last few years, marijuana legalization has really started gaining traction across the greater portion of the United States. As it becomes legal and becomes more popular, scientists are uncovering numerous health properties of the cannabis plant. One specific benefit of medical marijuana that has received a lot of media coverage in the last few years is the ability of marijuana to drastically improve the quality of live for people that suffer from epilepsy and seizures.
Modern Medicine vs Cannabis
Modern medicine is extremely advanced, but there is little it can do to abate the symptoms of epilepsy like constant seizures. Marijuana, on the other hand, has been shown to be a viable treatment for a wide variety of neurological disorders including epilepsy. Currently, this is a very hot topic and is very controversial.
Sadly enough, there is still a lot of research that needs to be done to better understand the properties of medical marijuana that are impeded by laws and regulations. There are still vast amounts of scientific research that need to be completed to gain a better understanding. However, we can make one claim for certain: many patients have reacted positively to the CBD treatments and have either completely stopped having life-debilitating seizures or have experienced a drastic reduction in the length and frequency of seizures.
Having said that, there have been studies that produced very promising results.
A study led by Dr. Orrin Devinsky, of New York University Langone Comprehensive Epilepsy Center studied 137 patients. Their ages ranged from 2 to 26 years of age, and everyone had some form of epilepsy or seizures. None of the patients had positively responded to available alternative treatments. And the results after daily cannabidiol administration for 12 weeks? The number of seizures were reduced by 54 percent! Admittedly, the study lacked a placebo group, but the results of the study are very exciting. There are simply too many benefits to ignore. Though further studies need to be performed, there is a lot of hope for those who have epilepsy, seizures, and convulsions. CBD is very inexpensive, it is showing positive results, and it is becoming more readily available with each passing day.
Unfortunately, some people make the false assumption that in order for a child with epilepsy to receive treatment from the cannabis plant, they have to get high. This simply isn’t true, because manufacturers have been able to isolate the cannabinoid CBD and administer it without THC (the psychoactive compound in marijuana). That is, children can take the drug to improve their lives and reduce seizures without getting high.
